Charles Ives (1874-1954)

The first composer whose music was distinctly “American” in sound, Ives was a successful insurance agent who wrote highly experimental music. He was a true original and innovator in many techniques. Many of his compositions were premiered decades after they were written.

“Most of the forward movements of life in general and of pioneers in most of the great activities, have been the work of essential religious-minded men.”
